Substance Painter Crash During Geometry Replacement

Substance Painter crash during geometry replacement, can be a really annoying thing. One reason for that could be, an outdated graphic card, or just a low capable one.

This article will be a very short one, but I think it will definitely help those with similar issue.

When we want to replace our scene in Substance Painter we go to Edit – Project configuration. And from the new popup project configuration window, we select our new 3D geometry file. If you are not familiar with the process, feel free to check out the official site for that matter.

Substance Painter, Project configuration window

Substance Painter can crash during that replacement process, for numerus reasons, such as too complex scene, inconsistency between material names, uv layout changes, corrupted files, etc.

In this article, i want to point out a very common reason for crashing. And that’s an outdated graphic card or a low capable one. Fortunately, is pretty easy to fix.

  1. Since Substance is evolve as well the drivers of graphic cards, if you have an outdated GPU can lead to many unpredicted results. Ideal, keep your graphic card (GPU) hardware as new as possible, and of course update its drivers when possible.
  2. If you have a low capable graphic card, you can still working with Substance Painter. But if you are dealing with complex scene, with many 3D geometrys and a lot of layers, it can get ugly, pretty fast.

How to Fix a Substance Painter Crash:

When you replace a geometry in Substance Painter from Project configuration, during that time, Substance do a lot of computations, that can burdens your graphic card. So in the middle of that computations Substance can crash, if you don’t have the proper hardware.

So in order to prevent that from happened, before you replace geometry, all you have to do is to turn off pretty much all the layers from all the geometry you have in your Substance scene.

turn off everything from layer stack

In that way, by turning off all of your layers, Substance doesn’t need to burdens your graphic card at once.

After the replacement has been completed, you can now turn on all of your layers once again. Without Substance to crash.
